To Scan a Document and save as a .pdf file.
The “Epson Perfection 4490 Photo Scanner” is hooked to a computer in the back row of computers in Jhn-‐366. This
scanner can be used to create a pdf file of a multipage document (manual feed). The scanner is an 8.5”x11” letter size
scanner capable of 4800 dpi color scans. But you should usually limit yourself to 600 dpi Black&White to keep the file
sizes reasonable. It is also a good idea to bring a thumb drive to save your scanned file.

Start up the Jhn-‐366 computer and Epson 4490 scanner

Log-‐in as geo-‐user

Open scanner, place document face down, top at top

Close scanner

Pressing the <pdf> button on the scanner should start the needed program (Epson Scan) but it may take 10-‐
20 seconds, press just once and be patient. The <pdf> button is the leftmost of four buttons on the front of the
Epson 4490 scanner.

The Epson Scan program can be started manually if it does not start automatically by pressing button. Double-‐
left-‐click on the “Epson Scan” icon on the desktop, or look for “Epson Scan” in the Windows Start Button Menu
structure.

Epson Scan starts up and opens a control window.

Set Document Type to “Text/Line Art”

Set Image Type to “Black & White”

Set Destination to “Other”

Set Resolution to 600 dpi

Set Target Size to Original

Single-‐Left-‐Click on “Preview” Button to make sure scanner is working, let preview complete

Single-‐Left-‐Click on “Scan” Button, new control window opens

Set Location to “My Documents”

Set Prefix to your name

Set type to PDF (This option may be grayed out if you pressed pdf button on scanner)

The three check boxes should be checked

Single-‐Left-‐Click on OK, the scan will take 30-‐60 seconds to complete, control window closes.

New option menu opens, either click on “Add Page” to scan another page.

Open scanner, set up next page, close, click scan, repeat as needed.

When done, click on “Save File” to save the completed PDF document in the “My Documents” folder.

Close/stop the Epson scan program, verify your file by looking at it, save your file in a safe place, and please
delete the copy from the “My Documents” folder. Remove original document from scanner.
"Loading the manual" means you need to wait until the file loads and becomes available for online reading. Some manuals are very large, and the time they take to appear depends on your internet speed.
