Are you ready to spend extra to get rid of the cables running across your room

to the rear surround-sound speakers? If yes, go for an add-on unit for wireless

transmission of audio signals to the speakers. If you don’t own a home theatre

system and are planning to buy one, you can buy an integrated home theatre

system with wireless rear speakers

tems are designed for

streaming music wire-

lessly across your liv-

ing room. Some may

let you enjoy music from your com-

puter or other audio source anywhere

around your house. Wireless speakers

are generally more compact than their

wired counterparts. These have built-in

antennae and don’t require additional

connections.

Notwithstanding their advantages,

if we go by the market feedback, sales

of wireless home audio systems have

not picked up owing to their high cost.

These can cost about Rs 16,000 more

than their wired counterparts. That’s

why you’ll find only a few models of

wireless home audio systems in elec-

tronics stores.

But, still there is a niche segment

of consumers that doesn’t want to

compromise on the aesthetics of their

living room due to the clutter of wires

running around the room. They also

get the added flexibility and conven

-

ience of not having to run wires across

the room to the rear speakers.

Wireless home audio systems

are offered by companies like Bose,

Philips, Sony, Panasonic, Samsung and

Logitech. Take a look at what’s avail-

able in the market.

types available

Wireless home audio systems can

either be add-on units or integrated

home theatre systems with wireless

speakers. Usually, these wirelessly

transmit audio signals to the remotely

placed speakers over RF link in the

2.4GHz band. There are also units mak-

ing use of the 5.8GHz band. Though

these work over shorter range, they are

less prone to interference from house-

hold appliances like microwave ovens

and your mobile phone operating in

900MHz or 2.4GHz band. Nor do they

interfere with the wireless network for

Internet access within or around your

house as most WLANs use the 2.4GHz

band. RF doesn’t require line of sight,

so you can hide away the transmitter

and receiver units.

Some systems may use infrared link

for communication, but these support

short distances within the same room

as they require line of sight between the

transmitter and the receiver.

Add-ons.

An add-on type wire-

less home audio system is basically a

combination of a wireless transmitter-

receiver pair and speaker system. The

wireless transmitter connects to your

audio/video source like DVD player,

the speakers including centre channel,

front right and front left, and power

supply. The receiver, kept at the other

end of the room, connects to the rear
