The Wireless Rain Sensor

For Irrigatio n Systems

I

NTRODUC TION

:

Congratulatio ns o n yo ur purc hase of the Wireless Rain Sensor. No t o nly is the Wireless Rain Sensor the
easiest to install rain sensor on the marke t toda y, b ut its rugged desi gn will provide you with years of hassle
free service, backed up b y o ur 3 year warranty. No special tools are required to install the Wireless Rain
Sensor, so don’t worry abo ut having to ma ke a ny last mi nute trips to the hardware store - you’ll be up and
running i n mi nutes, no t ho urs.

Please read through these ins truc tions i n their entirety be fore atte mpti ng to ins tall the Wireless Rain Sensor
- this will save time a nd prevent mista kes. Also, if yo u are uns ure about the proper wiring of irrigatio n
valve controllers or commo n electrical installations, please have a qualified contractor perfor m the
installation for yo u.

NSTALLA TION

:

There are two main co mpo ne nts supplied with yo ur Wireless Rain Sensor, the trans mi tter a nd the receiver
(See Fig.1). Always install the receiver first - at a location in close proxi mity to the irrigation co ntroller
(See Fig.2). Mo unt the receiver using the e nclosed screws to a solid surface within the wire range of the
supplied hoo kup wire.

The receiver control wires (2 white, 1 blue) are used to break the 24 VAC co mmo n gro und circuit o f the
solenoid valves or can be hoo ked up directly to the se nsor inp ut o f the controller itself. The w hite/white
combi natio n are used i n 90% of ins tallations however in the event the co ntroller requires a normally ope n
sensor (such as the Toro Greenkeeper) the white/blue co mbi natio n is used.

If the co ntroller has a space on the ter mi nal strip marked “Se nsor” or “SEN” the n directly wire the two
white wires to the two ter mi nals (unless the co ntroller requires a nor mally open se nsor circuit in w hich case
attac h o ne of the white wires and the blue wire to the ter mi nals). Now attach the red and blac k wires to the
24VAC s uppl y ter mi nals on the controller, assuring tha t the red goes to the ter mi nal marked + or POS a nd
the black wire is attached to the - or NEG ter mi nal if so marked. Ma ke s ure that the ante nna wire is kept
straight a nd tha t it is no t to uc hi ng a ny other wire or other metal object. Yo ur receiver is now completel y
installed!

You now s ho uld test yo ur wiring b y lightly pressing o n the spi ndle of the trans mi tter a nd holding it down
for a few seconds - the “Syste m Off - Rai n” light s ho uld illumina te for the d uratio n o f the actua tion. If the
light does no t illumi nate, please recheck yo ur wiring ( yo u ma y also look o n the web at
www.rainsensor.co m for additional help a nd specialized wiring co nfi gurations).

The trans mi tter s ho uld be adjusted prior to installation. The Wireless Rain Sensor can be adjus ted to
prevent the irrigation s yste m fro m s tarting or co nti nuing a fter rainfall qua ntities of 1/8", 1/4", 1/2", 3/4" or
1". To adjust it to the desired shut-o ff q ua ntity, rota te the cap o n the switch ho usi ng so that the pins are
located in the proper slots (See Fig.4). Do not use e xcessive force to twist the cap as this may brea k the
pins. The ti me that it ta kes the Wireless Rain Sensor to reset for nor mal sprinkler operation after the rain
has stopped is deter mined b y weather conditio ns (wind, sunlight, humidity, e tc.) These co nditions will
deter mine how fast the hygroscopic discs dry out, a nd since the turf is also experiencing the sa me
conditio ns, their respective drying rates will roughly parallel each other. So w hen the tur f needs more
water, the Wireless Rain Sensor is already reset to allow the sprinkler sys te m to go at the ne xt sc heduled
cycle.
The best locatio n to mo unt the tra ns mitter sho uld be as close to the receiver as possible to avoid structures
