In the past, digital cameras were far too expensive to be considered for
use outside the realm of professional photographers. Now digital cameras
are the must have gadget on everyone’s wish list. With inkjet photo printers
becoming more affordable, you can even have your own photo lab at home.
Capturing and sharing your memories has never been easier!

Choosing the right camera for you

Before you go shopping for a digital camera, do some research on the
Internet. Find out what models are on the market and what features to expect
for the amount you’re willing to pay. Familiarise yourself with digital camera
jargon. It’s easy to get lost in a sea of information if you’re new to cameras
or computers.

Working out what kind of digital camera user you’ll be, may also help narrow
the search.

Point and Shoot User:

If you want to e-mail photos to family and friends

and print out standard 4x6 inch photos, a 2-3 megapixel camera should
suffice. Look for a camera that is easy to use and requires little or no
adjustment of settings. Choose a compact camera that feels comfortable in
your hands and is easily stored in your bag or pocket while on the go. A USB
connection will make connectivity to your PC quick and easy.

Serious Amateur:

If you want to print photos in 8x10 inch size or larger

you’ll need a camera with 4 megapixels or greater. You’ll also appreciate
having the choice of either auto or manual control over the camera settings
once you get more savvy with photography. Some higher end cameras
feature a Firewire connection, which offers fast transfer speeds to your
computer - make sure your computer actually has a FireWire slot before
you choose this option. Also look for a camera that has the ability to add
accessories like different lenses.

Memor y Cards and Readers

Digital camera’s come with a slot for a variety of media cards. When you
buy your camera check what type of storage media it requires. You’ll find
that most cameras actually include a memory card but these cards are
really just to get you started. A higher capacity card means that you don’t
have to change cards and you can take pictures in the highest quality all
the time. A card with 64-128MB capacity should keep most users snapping
away happily. Your reseller can give you an idea of how many photos each
capacity can hold.

There are also high speed memory cards available which are designed to
provide enhanced performance and fast data transfer rates – perfect for fast
downloads and less time between shots.

Photo Printing

The perfect companion for your digital camera is a photo printer. Normal
inkjet printers typically use three colours for colour printing. A photo inkjet
printer will use six. You may want to choose a photo printer with individual
ink tanks. This will keep costs down because you’ll only have to replace
individual ink cartridges as they run out. A cool feature to look out for is
a memory card slot on the printer. This allows you to plug a memory card
directly into the photo printer. This way you can print your photos directly
from the card - no need to download them to the PC first.

"Loading the manual" means you need to wait until the file loads and becomes available for online reading. Some manuals are very large, and the time they take to appear depends on your internet speed.
