How to Reset a GE Washer: All Methods
Updated · from manufacturer service documentation
A reset clears a stored fault code and gives the control a fresh start — useful once you've already addressed (or ruled out) the underlying cause.
Viewing Fault Codes: Consumer Error Mode
From an idle state (all LEDs off), press and hold the Start button for 10 seconds. All LEDs turn on, signaling you to release Start. The Pause and Lid Locked LEDs blink constantly while in this mode; the first fault (if present) shows on the display, and pressing Start again shows the next fault. The consumer cannot delete codes or run components in this mode — it's for viewing only. Pressing any other button, or turning any knob, exits Consumer Error Mode. It also times out automatically after 10 minutes.
Clearing Fault Codes: Service Mode
Clearing codes requires Service Mode rather than Consumer Error Mode. From an idle state (all LEDs off), press and hold Start for 10 seconds while rotating the cycle selection knob 180 degrees (seven clicks), then release Start. Once in Service Mode, rotate the cycle select knob to Test 16, Clear All Fault Codes — pressing Start will clear all fault codes. Service Mode times out after 30 minutes of inactivity, or exit early by pressing Power (on 7-segment display models).
If the Code Comes Back
If the same fault reappears right after clearing it, the reset only cleared the stored code — it didn't fix the cause. Work through that specific fault's cause list (see the GE washer not-spinning page for the lid-lock/motor faults, for example) rather than clearing codes repeatedly.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I see what fault code my GE washer has stored?
Press and hold Start for 10 seconds from an idle state to enter Consumer Error Mode — this displays stored faults one at a time as you press Start, without letting you delete them.
How is Service Mode different from Consumer Error Mode?
Consumer Error Mode only lets you view fault codes. Service Mode (entered with a different button/knob combination) lets you run component tests and clear all fault codes using Test 16.
How long before these modes time out?
Consumer Error Mode times out after 10 minutes; Service Mode times out after 30 minutes of inactivity.
Will clearing the fault codes fix my washer?
Only if you've already fixed the underlying cause — clearing codes just resets the stored history. If the same fault returns, the actual problem is still there.
Can Service Mode do anything besides clear fault codes?
Yes — Test 16 (Clear all Fault Codes) is just the last entry on a longer numbered list of component tests you reach by turning the cycle knob. Documented tests include the pressure sensor (Test 10, which blinks off LEDs as the tub crosses roughly 2″–7″ of water and shuts the valves off at 7″), the lid switch (Test 13), and the spin and agitate motions (Tests 14–15, each running a child-safety check before the lid locks). These are technician diagnostics for specific components, not a general reset — Test 16 is still the one that clears fault history.
