SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT
A
s enterprise demands for computing power grow, IT
organizations must be able to respond quickly when
mission-critical servers need attention. The Dell 2161DS
Remote Console Switch is designed to give administrators
the capability to manage their servers worldwide through
complete keyboard, video, mouse (KVM) connectivity. If a
server needs rebooting, the 2161DS switch enables every
step of the reboot process to be seen—even the BIOS—
without requiring additional hardware or software to be
installed on the server. The 2161DS switch can provide admin-
istrators with access to the same KVM capability whether
they are plugged in directly to the server or located on the
other side of the globe. The 2161DS switch is also designed
to allow administrators to view multiple servers simultane-
ously in any size window they prefer—helping to simplify
scripted software loads and wide-scale planned reboots.
Understanding Dell 2161DS switch features
and components
The Dell 2161DS Remote Console Switch consists of a rack-
mountable KVM switch incorporating KVM over IP tech-
nology from Avocent. The switch is designed to provide
secure local and remote connectivity to multivendor plat-
forms running mixed operating systems such as Microsoft®
Windows® and Linux® operating systems. Up to 128 servers
can be connected to a single switch, and each 2161DS sup-
ports one local and up to two remote users.
The 2161DS switch provides administrators with
remote, or
digital
, control access to all attached servers.
Remote administrators have the same level of control over
their servers through the network as they would have at the
rack through the local, or
analog
, console. Servers can be
controlled directly through an analog port on the 2161DS
switch for local KVM connectivity and administration,
or remotely across a 10/100BaseT Gigabit Ethernet con-
nection. Authentication and 128-bit Secure Sockets Layer
(SSL) encryption help provide security over remote
connections.
Administrators access the switch locally using the
on-screen display (OSD) and remotely through the Dell
Remote Console Software (RCS) Java-based client inter-
face (see Figure 1). Key features and capabilities of the
2161DS switch include:
•
1U or 0U rack-mounting options
•
Sixteen Category 5 (Cat 5) RJ-45 ports for
server connections
•
Up to 1024×768 video resolution for both
local analog and remote digital connections
•
Recommended maximum cable length of
50 feet between the 2161DS switch and
the server
•
Firmware upgradeable over the network
using RCS software

Using the Dell 2161DS Remote Console Switch to
Control Data Center Servers
The Dell
™
2161DS Remote Console Switch combines local and remote access technology
to help deliver flexible, centralized control of data center servers from virtually any loca-
tion. By enabling administrators to manage multiple servers in multiple locations from a
single location, the 2161DS helps provide IT organizations with ease of administration,
effective use of IT resources, and cost-effective scalability.
"Loading the manual" means you need to wait until the file loads and becomes available for online reading. Some manuals are very large, and the time they take to appear depends on your internet speed.
